Local Playwrights

Hey, did ya see that nifty career piece on Bo Wilson in the Times-Dispatch classified section yesterday? It really was cool to see a really different career spotlighted. I particularly enjoyed the very-staged looking photo with Bo on his computer and on the phone. I'm not sure how that was supposed to represent the activities that make up his career; was he berating a director about changes to his script perhaps?

Anyway, congrats on the exposure Mr. Wilson (and nicely written Ms. Tupponce). In recognition of local playwrights, (in addition to my shout-out to Sycamore Rouge for doing Woody Eney's world premiere next season) I'm going to sneak away from work to see Doug Jones's play on Darwin at the Science Museum. It closes this weekend folks!

I tried to find the piece on Bo...no luck. If you find it can you post the link?

Thanks!

I searched the T-D site and didn't find it. I'll keep looking and post a link if I make any progress.

So, it's in the classifieds, doesn't that mean they paid for it to be there?

I don't think these "first page of the classifieds" articles are paid for by anyone. They've been running for a few months I think and are mainly a way to draw people to the classified section (since there aren't many jobs posted there anymore, perhaps???)

Anyway, from what I remember, the article wasn't pimping any specific project by Bo either, another reason to think it wasn't paid for by a theater.

As far as Pimping Bo... I think the article was actually poorly timed. As a playwright, his most recent show Mona's Arrangements just closed and he is currently directing, but that had nothing to do with the article. I think Dave must be correct about the TD just wanting a piece to put in as a draw.

Well, it was written by Joan Tuppence, and listed as Joan Tupponce & Associates, Inc. That was what made it look like purchased space. Is she a local critic? Is she his agent, or something?

Joan T. is a local critic, an experienced freelance writer and a distinguished member of the Richmond Theatre Critics Circle. Just FYI!
